American Express Transfer Partners in Canada

If you have been listening to U.S. podcasts on points and miles or reading American blogs you may have noticed something confusing when it comes to American Express. Our American Express partners and ratios look a bit different. While we have some of the same transfer partners there are some major differences, and we are going to go through them in this post.

Airline Transfer Partners:

  • Air Canada Aeroplan: 1,000 Amex Membership Reward Points = 1,000 Aeroplan Points
  • Air France – KLM Flying Blue: 1,000 Amex Membership Reward Points = 1,000 Flying Blue Miles
  • Cathay Pacific: 1,000 Amex Membership Reward Points = 750 Asia Miles
  • Delta SkyMiles: 1,000 Amex Membership Reward Points = 750 SkyMiles
  • Etihad Guest: 1,000 Amex Membership Reward Points = 750 Etihad Guest Miles
  • The British Airways Club: 1,000 Amex Membership Reward Points = 1,000 Avios

Note: Air France – KLM Flying Blue recently received an upgrade. Previously, 1,000 Amex points transferred to only 750 Flying Blue miles, so the move to a 1:1 ratio is a solid improvement for Canadian cardholders.

Hotel Transfer Partners:
Amex Membership Rewards can also be transferred to two major hotel loyalty programs:

  • Hilton: 1,000 Amex Membership Reward Points = 1,000 Hilton Honors Points
  • Marriott: 5 Amex Membership Reward Points = 6 Marriott Bonvoy Points

If you have been following U.S points and miles content, you may have noticed that Amex Membership Rewards transfer to Hilton Honors at a rate of 1,000 points to 2,000 Hilton Honors points. Unfortunately, this ratio is not available in Canada.

That said, American Express Canada does occasionally off transfer bonuses. These promotions are a great way to boost the value of your points and have applied to both Hilton and Marriott in the past. Most recent was a 30% transfer bonus for Marriott.
