If you shop at Sobeys, chances are you’ve heard, “Do you have a Scene Card” at checkout. For the longest time I heard the phrase but didn’t think much of it. I’d scan my free Scene points card, not really paying attention, and occasionally, I’d get $10 back.
Turns out… I was wrong.
The Scene+ program has some great opportunity to enhance your travel on points and miles. First things first; if you shop at Sobeys or Safeway, make sure you have the free Scene points card. When paying, you’ll scan that card first and then pay with your Scene credit card to double up on points.
Scene has quite a few credit cards, but below are the ones I think offer the most value.
Travel and Lifestyle Cards – With Zero Foreign Transaction Fee’s:
Scotiabank offers three personal cards with zero foreign transaction fees. In Canada that’s a big deal, most credit cards charge around 2.5% on foreign purchases. These cards are important to take when traveling abroad as they can save you a lot of money. These cards are available as either a Visa or American Express, but all earn Scene points.
Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card – $150 Annual Fee
- 3 points on every $1 you spend at Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, & participating Co-ops
- 6 Complimentary lounge visits with the Visa Airport Companion Program
- 3 Points for every $1 when booking hotels and rentals cards through Scene+ Travel (Powered by Expedia)
Scotiabank Gold American Express Card – $120 Annual Fee
- 6 points on every $1 spend at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland, and more
- 3 Points for every $1 when booking hotels and rentals cards through Scene+ Travel (Powered by Expedia)
Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card – $399 Annual Fee
- 2 points for every $1 on all eligible purchases
- 10 Complimentary lounge visits with the Visa Airport Companion Program
- 3 Points for every $1 when booking hotels and rentals cards through Scene+ Travel (Powered by Expedia)
Scene Credit Cards with Zero Annual Fee:
There are two cards that earn scene points with a $0 annual fee. These are great options if you want to keep costs low, but its worth noting they typically come with smaller welcome bonuses. You’ll also pay foreign transaction fees when using them outside of Canada.
Scotiabank Scene Visa Card – $0 Annual Fee
- 2 Points for every $1 spend on Sobeys, Safeway, Foodland, and participating Co-ops and Freshco
Scotiabank American Express Card – $0 Annual Fee
- 3 points for every $1spend on Sobeys, Safeway, Freshco, Foodland, and more.
One important thing to be aware of: The Scotiabank Scene Visa Card is not considered a Travel & Lifestyle card. If travel insurance is important to you, make sure you read the coverage details carefully before choosing a card.
Apply Scene Points to Travel
Scene points aren’t transferable like American Express Membership Rewards or RBC Avion Points. However, unlike other major credit cards companies you aren’t restricted to only booking travel through a single portal.
Scene offers a feature called “Apply Points to Travel”. This allows you to book travel directly on your Scene credit card. Once the purchase posts, you go into the Scene app and erase that travel expense using points.
The redemption rate is straightforward: 100 Scene points = $1
If you have ever listened to a US based points podcast, you may have heard them talk about the Capital One Purchase Eraser. This is essentially the Canadian version of that feature. Just keep in mind that the purchase must code as “Travel” in order to be eligible. Not all your vacation expenses will code as travel but things like flights, rental cards, hotels, and Air BnB usually do.
Steps on How to Apply Scene Points to Travel:
- Open and log into your Scene App
- Go to Rewards
- Select Travel
- Click Apply Points to Travel
- Choose the eligible purchase you want to erase with points
Welcome Bonus Rules:
Even though there are multiple Scene cards available, you can’t sign up for them and earn welcome bonuses each time. Scotiabank’s rules state that you can only earn welcome bonuses once every two years. This applies to new application, or if you are product switching a current credit card.
I hope this helps clarify how the Scene program works and how it can fit into your overall points and miles strategy.
