Air Canada is the largest Canadian airline, and for most travelers, it’s your go to option when booking flights. Air Canada is part of Star Alliance, which has 26 airline members. This means your Aeroplan points can be used for Air Canada flights, as well as Star Alliance flights booked through Air Canada. Air Canada uses a dynamic pricing model for its own flights, while partner flights follow the Flight Reward Chart, which has set points prices that change based on the distance you need to fly to your destination.
Aeroplan points are generally easy to earn. Besides credit cards, Aeroplan has promotions with Starbucks, Uber, Uber Eats, Bell, and more offers that are always popping up. I recommend keeping close tabs on the Air Canada app, as there are always new promotions and offers.
Credit Cards:
There are three providers for Aeroplan credit cards: CIBC, TD, and American Express. Across these three providers, the cards are broken down into three categories:
- Entry Level – lowest annual fees, no free checked bag with Air Canada, and the smallest welcome bonus.
- Core – reasonable annual fees, a free checked bag with Air Canada, and a larger welcome bonus.
- Premium/Reserve – high annual fees, a free checked bag with Air Canada, Maple Leaf Lounge access, and the highest welcome bonus offers.
Note: American Express usually offers the highest welcome bonuses, and throughout the year, they often have elevated welcome offers.

Welcome Bonus Rules:
You may see all the card options and start picturing all the welcome bonuses you can get. Unfortunately, like most credit cards, there are rules around how many welcome bonuses you can earn. You can earn one welcome bonus per category (entry, core, and premium) per lifetime, and it doesn’t matter which bank you choose.
Player 2:
Aeroplan is a great program for having a Player 2 because it offers Aeroplan Family Sharing. This allows you to pool your points together with up to eight linked accounts. It’s also an opportunity to diversify your credit cards, especially if you want a Visa because you’re worried about only having American Express.
Aeroplan is a great program with endless options for travel all over the world. Happy travelling!
